US Social Media Influencer Fined Following Large-Scale Electric Bike Ride on Iconic Australian Bridge
New South Wales authorities have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and served two driving violation citations for reported reckless operation following a large group of e-bike riders gathered on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during peak-hour traffic on a weekday.
The Incident: A Prohibited Ride
A group of approximately 40 individuals riding electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the primary roadway of the bridge, an area where bicycle riding is banned. The assembly subsequently reversed direction and rode through the downtown area and a nearby district.
"This had potential for people to be injured and killed," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.
Police said they did not immediately pursue the group due to concerns for public safety but rather found the group at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near the Botanic Gardens, where they dispersed.
Fines Imposed for Content Creator
Later in the week, police stated they had served the US social media influencer known as the influencer, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for negligent driving (not involving death or prior injury), with a penalty of over five hundred dollars and three demerit points each, in relation to the bridge ride-out. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.
The personality reportedly has over 3.4 million followers on one platform and more than 1.2m on Instagram.
Influencer's Comments
The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper this week after the incident gained traction on news sites and social media, saying he regretted giving "bike life" a bad reputation.
"I accept the blame. That was among the safest ride-outs I’ve ever seen," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, and I intend to abide by the laws and norms of Sydney. When I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to greet people near the bridge."
"I’m unfamiliar with the city, it was my fault we ended up on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group completes the entirety of the bridge and turns around, an illegal act. Or we reverse, basically, before we’re on the bridge. I chose at the time to go back."
National Debate on E-Bike Regulation
The spate of electric bicycles on streets across the country has sparked increasing demands for stricter rules. The federal health minister, the minister, recently said that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Young people have engaged in reckless acts on bikes since the invention of the penny-farthing [but] the harm that are presenting at our ERs are absolutely devastating," he stated. "We’ve got to make sure we prevent these things entering the country [and] police are given the authority to crack down, to confiscate them, to crush them, to destroy them."
The state reported over two hundred injuries related to ebikes in 2024. However, in the first seven months of the following year, that figure jumped to two hundred thirty-three injuries plus four fatalities.
