The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica
The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He joined Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do his normal game.
"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.
According to international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a competitive full international.
He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club pursue future success.
After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"The manager treats me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I have to earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
