The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
