The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress built from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in episode 6 has them witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident originates in the stage play The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the entity in season 2.
The Power of Fear
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
