The Actress Expresses Mentioning Trump Would ‘Add Fuel to a Fire’ That’s Ripping the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels appropriate to voice opinions countering the Trump administration, fearing it could worsen unhelpful debate and deepen rifts across the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Explains Jennifer Lawrence
Speaking with media, the Oscar winner shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I felt like I was acting frantically without clear direction. But as we’ve learned, through repeated campaigns, Hollywood stars fail to influence in any way on who people vote for.”
She continued, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to heighten conflict dividing the nation apart.”
Changing Allegiances
Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about supporting right and leftwing presidential nominees in past elections. Raised by Republican parents in her home state, she cast her ballot for John McCain in 2008 before joining the Democrats and revealing she understood during the Obama era that voting Republican was voting against her own rights as a female citizen.
Past Statements
In 2015, she stated that Trump winning the presidency could represent “a catastrophic event” and backed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she gave her endorsement to Kamala Harris, “since I believe she’s a strong contender and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her disapproval of Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence celebrities have over the public choices was underscored by the outcome.
“This upcoming term appears changed,” noted the actress about Trump’s presidency. “Since he said what he was going to do. We understood his record for the previous administration. He was very clear. And that’s the option selected.”
Latest Film
Jennifer Lawrence is highlighting Die, My Love, the filmmaker’s movie in which she plays a new mother who deals with her psychological well-being in a remote area. Speaking at a press conference for the film in Venice, Lawrence commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s horrifying. What’s taking place is no less than a genocide and it’s awful.”
Broader Concerns
The actress elaborated by stating that she was disheartened by “the hostility in the discussions of the political landscape at present and how that is going to be commonplace to the kids right now. It’s going to be typical to them that politicians lie.”
Lawrence attempted to refocus anger about the situation to policymakers rather than actors and artists. “Stay focused on who is responsible,” she advised, which was interpreted as a reference to the recent commitment supported by more than 4,000 entertainment industry figures to avoid certain cultural organizations.
Individual Insights
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award early in her career for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is receiving praise for her work in her latest project. While the director has disputed the narrative being interpreted as one of maternal mental health issues and psychosis, she revealed that she did relate to aspects of her character’s journey after the delivery of her youngest child, shortly after production wrapped.
“I felt anxiety regarding my baby,” she explained, “imagining every worst-case scenario, and then questioning everything that I was attempting. I was already in therapy, but I got on a treatment called Zurzuvae and I continued it for 14 days and it really helped.”
Film Challenges
The actor also mentioned about the liberating necessity of shooting revealing sequences in the film while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she remarked, of being forced to cast off vanity. “Honestly, I do have moments where I’m like, What separates me between myself and a sex worker? But it doesn’t keep me up at night.”
