Milei Statuette, Anyone? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Charity
Relinquishing unwanted gifts can be considered a little discourteous – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by world leaders during her travels. The eclectic collection could include items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Italian art dealer. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue donated to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The presents reportedly stored in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally considering auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused for years.
The detailed catalog remains officially released, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a detailed register of all declared gifts was submitted to lawmakers. The question focused on whether a legal value limit was being followed. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.
A Global Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Context
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from within her party, with winning over foreign leaders and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This unique auction highlights a novel approach to handle the state presents that build up during a leader's tenure.
