Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested the legal system and the law won.

A couple of months following being handed a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Expected Jailing

The adjudicated coup-monger – who had been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a series of judicial steps and petitions proceed – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, amidst growing talk that he will be moved to a notorious top-security prison.

Past Statements on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the right-wing ex- paratrooper showed scant mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“What’s the need to give those lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They should just get fucked, end of story. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up there, you simply need is not rape, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Location Speculation

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week visited the prison in an seeming attempt to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, said he anticipated the 70-year-old figure to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive problems – the outcome of a almost deadly assault during the last election race – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is very grave. He cannot to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the standard of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas remembered seeing cells containing forty prisoners: “It's practically one meter squared per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's expected imprisonment.

Writing in a major newspaper, one more backer, the former communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and asserted Brazil was about to witness “the largest unfairness in its record”.

“It is an injustice that eats away the souls of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied General Response

That may be true considering the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his predicted incarceration has also gladdened the spirits of millions individuals who feel he deserves to be incarcerated for planning to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and even conspiring to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the sitting president's allied group, commented: “Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain dignified treatment – but respectful care in prison. He must not carry on being his self-appointed guard for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the severe treatment of inmates, had unexpectedly realized to their privileges. “Just now has the conservative fringe – which has always claimed that civil liberties are not for offenders – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what conditions are actually like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, degrading handling”.

Likely Jail Environment

In spite of speculation that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now houses about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely destination looks to be a close penitentiary for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are much more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the impressive official residence, around 12 miles away.

As per information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were provided by his family,” information indicated.

Ideological Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
