A familiar auction figure is a well-known face at the annual bidding war.

A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a well-known sushi chain, which operates restaurants across the country and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna brings good luck," stated the company president, a regular bidder at the yearly new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder told reporters that he was "astonished at the final price," adding, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This most recent acquisition tops his own historic purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite once remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to break his own record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. The previous year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be served at its restaurants nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Immediate Consumption

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly sliced up for diners at the bidder's sushi chains shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," said one elated diner.
