‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao
The debut appearance the Spanish forward played in English soil, an young representing the reserve team against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he played in the country, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team six weeks after that, indeed, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the forward admits, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized my contract, I kept finding the net, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the usual talk. It’s unclear how true it was, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; following that, the quick travel to the airport and another flight to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, due in part to the requirements of competing at this level. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and the German side in Europe. But, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat along the Nervión river flanked by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the Champions League, where they are unique and returning after absence in ten years. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.
The player believed it hard enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. As the child of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after his first-team bow in August 2018, he experienced a serious knee problem, the cut, a relegation and a call back before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the first team but with every stage you advance through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.
“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a turning point because it shifted the perspective. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it helps. You develop habits you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. Every small aspect: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. He left emotionally in the pandemic season, aged 23, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in that season, he netted three goals in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the scoring picked up. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and if one day the requirement appears for your role, a return could happen. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
