Adult Swim's Premier New Show of 2025 Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
