Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off win over the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.
Play-Off Climax
This led to a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even better person. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself a bit too far to make up, finishing one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
